Great news from Virginia yesterday!

After accepting Governor Spanberger's technical amendments, the bill expanding #RankedChoiceVoting became law.

This expands the number of localities that can choose to use #RCV and makes the option permanent.

Across the country, the movement for more choice and a healthier democracy is growing from the ground up!

In 2024, DC voters overwhelmingly chose to adopt #RankedChoiceVoting and #OpenPrimaries in the district. Currently, the #RCV portion has been funded, but not the semi-open primary provision, which threatens to exclude 85,000 independents from a meaningful say in elections.

More than half of state legislators are often unwilling to work across the aisle for fear of losing their primary election. Opening primaries can depolarize politics and allow for more bipartisan cooperation.

A Statement from Rank the Vote on the Trump Administration’s Executive Order Targeting Mail-In Voting:

The Trump Administration’s executive order targeting mail-in voting and establishing a federal citizenship list is a clear threat to voter privacy, states rights, and democracy as a whole.

The order attempts to regulate mail-in ballots without any safeguards to voter and ballot privacy. In addition, the directive for the Department of Homeland Security to collect voter data and maintain a federal citizenship list is an overreach of the Federal government and a threat to voter privacy protections. The order conflicts with the ability for states to be laboratories of innovation and reform that has shaped American democracy since its founding.

Article I, Section 4 of the U. S. Constitution expressly grants states the authority to regulate elections — not the President. The president can only execute laws made by Congress, not make law himself. Sadly, this order is the most aggressive federal action in a long campaign against voting access.

We stand for the right of every American voter to fully participate in the democratic process without undue barriers or threats to privacy. We stand in solidarity with the rights of states to implement democracy solutions like mail in voting, voter access, ranked choice voting.

American democracy is not ruled by the whims of one person, but by We the People. We call on the Courts and Congress to act swiftly to uphold our right to vote and protect States’ rights.

Open, all-candidate primaries give every voter a voice, put all candidates on the same ballot, and ensure politicians must answer to the full community – not just the extremes.

Did you know?

Alabama is one of only eight states with open primaries, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Average voter turnout for Presidential elections tends to be around 60%, but for midterm elections, turnout is rarely over 50% of the voting population. More voters participating in elections helps to reduce polarization and holds elected officials more accountable to the people they serve.

Daylight savings is when we adjust clocks forward. Let’s move democracy forward with fair maps!

Gerrymandering results in uncompetitive elections and polarization. Fair maps put voters first.
