It`s Primary Day in Arizona! π³οΈ The Grand Canyon State is 1 of 12 states to use semi-open primaries for state and congressional elections.
Open primaries allow for more voters to be heard and can increase turnout in elections. When you combine open primaries with ranked choice voting, you increase accountability and civility while eliminating split votes.

While Elbridge Gerry was an elder statesman, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and vice president to Monroe, he is best known for a moniker he didn`t want.
As governor of Massachusetts, he signed legislation that created a highly partisan and odd shaped district. The political cartoonist Elkanah Tisdale satirized the district as a salamander and it became known as "gerry-mander."
Today, gerrymandered districts carve up communities and voters to tilt the scales in favor of politicians instead of the people.
We can slay the gerrymander with fair maps and proportional representation!

On this day in 1964, the Civil Rights Act became law. The law banned discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin in schools, workplaces, and public life.
It also outlawed unequal voter registration practices. This was an important step in American democracy of protecting all people from discrimination.
The Voting Rights Act came the following year in 1965. That law banned literacy tests altogether and other discriminatory voting practices.
The work of protecting and expanding our democracy continues today.
