Imagine how widely the vote is going to be split. It’s quite possible that the primary will narrow it down to only two who may not have been able to muster 25% between them.

And it wouldn’t be surprising if they were from opposite ends of the political spectrum, because those are the positions that tend to attract the most fervid supporters. So what if the No. 3 candidate was a sensible moderate who would’ve received lots of support from all quarters had she or he been able to make it to the finals?

This is as clear an example as we’re likely to find why ranked-choice voting is the way to go in the future. Unfortunately, it’s not going to help us this go-round.
