It’s possible your Halloween costume parties have come and gone, but in the event you still need a last-minute idea, this one is cheap and easy to assemble with items you can find around your house.

What is it? A ranked choice voting ballot box.

This civic-minded costume might not be as scary as a vampire or werewolf, but it’ll definitely spook partisan legislators in states that are afraid of a little competition.

This can be a standalone costume or it can be paired with an extroverted +1 dressed as a Poll Worker who goes around with printed ballots for other attendees to vote on such things as Favorite Candy, Best Burger Chain, or Favorite Costume at the party (other than your own). Of course, you’ll use ranked choice voting as the voting mechanism and then tally votes at the end of the night.

This costume is easy as 1-2-3, just like ranked choice voting.

  1. Find a cardboard box, decorate it however you see fit–and print a “Ballot Box” label to affix to the side.
  2. Cut slits in the box that you can run suspenders through to hold it up.
  3. Prepare yourself to defend democracy one awkward party conversation at a time.
